NATAAZ World Theatre Day - 2026

The National Theatre Arts Association of Zambia (NATAAZ) officially celebrated World Theatre Day 2026 on Saturday, 28 March 2026, at the Lusaka Playhouse. Although World Theatre Day is globally observed on 27 March, NATAAZ extended the celebrations to the following Saturday to encourage broader public participation and engagement. The day's activities began with a colorful march at 07:30 hours from the Lusaka Post Office to the Lusaka Playhouse, drawing artists, theatre practitioners, and supporters of the performing arts. The procession symbolized the unity and resilience of Zambia's theatre community while raising public awareness about the importance of theatre in society. At the Lusaka Playhouse, audiences were treated to a rich programme of live entertainment, including stage plays, poetry, spoken word, dance, and dramatic performances. The event also served as a valuable networking platform where emerging and established artists connected with theatre lovers, industry stakeholders, and notable figures within Zambia's performing arts sector. The celebration formed part of the global World Theatre Day movement, whose 2026 international message was delivered by acclaimed American actor and theatre-maker Willem Dafoe. His message emphasized theatre's unique ability to unite people, inspire dialogue, and bridge social divides. In Zambia, the event reinforced NATAAZ's commitment to promoting theatre as a tool for cultural expression, education, and community development, while also launching momentum for upcoming initiatives such as the regional production Imaginary Harvest and the National Theatre Festival scheduled to take place in Chingola later in the year.
