Theatre Teaches Us That We Are Just A Part Of Other People's Lives

For more than a decade, NAPSA Theatre has been a meeting place for Zambia's most ambitious performing arts. Every edition brings new voices to old stages, new audiences to new stories — and reminds us that the theatre is, above all, a space we share.

Our History

Overview

NAPSA Theatre Club — originally Profund Theatre Club — is a prominent amateur and community theatre group based in Lusaka, Zambia, closely linked to the National Pension Scheme Authority and its sports and recreation facilities.

Inception

Profund Theatre Club

The group was formed in 1980 as Profund Theatre Club. The name “Profund” derived from the Public Service Pensions Fund — the predecessor to the modern NAPSA. It started as a theatre club for public service employees and enthusiasts, part of Zambia's post-independence growth in organised Western-style theatre in urban Lusaka. This era built on earlier institutions like the Lusaka Playhouse (opened 1958) and Chikwakwa Theatre at the University of Zambia, which emphasised socially relevant and popular drama.

Act II
Rebranding

Profund → NAPSA Theatre

The club later changed its name to NAPSA Theatre Club, reflecting the evolution of the pension scheme into the National Pension Scheme Authority. The group operates in connection with the NAPSA Sports Complex in Lusaka, often using venues like the Lusaka Playhouse for performances.

Our Story

NAPSA Theatre

NAPSA Theatre was born from a simple belief: that theatre transforms lives. Since our inaugural edition in 2012, we have brought world-class productions to Lusaka's grandest stages — celebrating African storytelling and nurturing homegrown talent that deserves a global platform.

From gripping drama to explosive dance, our annual festival draws audiences from across Zambia and beyond, creating shared experiences that echo long after the curtain falls.

Every edition is built around a theme — a question we ask ourselves and our audiences. The 2026 programme asks: what does it mean to belong?
